The company was also the first to deploy hybrid cars, in Seattle in 2003. Zipcar was the first car sharing program to use electric cars, when it placed some of the first generation Toyota RAV4 EV's in its' Boston fleet in 2002. Zipcar's role in the Action Plan is to provide increased access to electric cars to car sharing members in Chicago. Both the City and Zipcar are partnering with 350green for charging station installation. As a part of this plan, Chicago is installing hundreds of electric car charging stations around the city. Zipcar is working with the City of Chicago as well as the Chicago Area Clean Cities Coalition, positioning the company's electric car launch as part of the Chicago Climate Action Plan. In Thursday’s press release, Zipcar noted that Avis Car Rental invented the on-airport car rental business in 1946 and today parent company Avis Budget Group continues to be a leader in the industry. ![]() In March, Avis Budget Group completed its $500 million acquisition of Zipcar, which now operates as an Avis subsidiary. “We’re committed to bringing our ‘wheels when you want them’ service to wherever our members want to be.’’ “Since many of our Zipsters think about our service only where they live and work, this promotion is designed to remind them Zipcar convenience is available when they travel,’’ Zipcar President Mark Norman said in a statement. But Zipcar has also found college campuses and airports to be friendly territory for its business model. For this group, becoming a Zipcar member can make more sense than owning a car and paying fees to garage it. ![]()
